The Barracks

The Barracks

The Barracks aims to provide more than just shelter. It offers a stable, respectful, and supportive environment where residents are encouraged to focus on their wellbeing and take practical steps toward securing long-term housing. Support is delivered in a strengths-based and person-centred way, recognising each resident’s individual circumstances, experiences, and goals.
During their stay, residents are supported to engage with local services, address immediate needs, and work towards sustainable housing outcomes. The Barracks plays an important role in responding to homelessness in the Bathurst community by offering safety, stability, and support at a critical time.

Facilities

Rooms

The Barracks has eight individual rooms available for men experiencing homelessness. One room is reserved for emergency accommodation to respond to urgent and unforeseen needs within the community.

Each resident is provided with their own private room to support dignity, safety, and personal space. Residents are responsible for maintaining their room in a clean, tidy, and respectful condition throughout their stay. This includes regular cleaning, proper disposal of rubbish, and taking care of furnishings and fixtures provided.

Maintaining a clean living space supports personal wellbeing, shared living arrangements, and helps ensure the Barracks remains a safe and comfortable environment for all residents. Support can be provided where needed to assist residents in meeting these expectations.

Common rooms

Shared areas at The Barracks include the kitchen, lounge, and bathrooms. Residents are expected to use these spaces respectfully and keep them clean and tidy after use, so they remain safe and comfortable for everyone

We meet each person where they are recognizing that recovery is not one path but many. For some, healing comes through time on the land; for others, through cultural ceremonies, sweat lodges, group support, or programs like AA. Our goal is always to find what helps each person reconnect with their strength, community, and spirit.

Housing support

Residents are supported to explore housing options, complete housing applications, and connect with relevant housing providers. Staff can assist with planning next steps and working towards sustainable accommodation outcomes.

Service connection

Support is available to help residents link with health, wellbeing, financial, and community services, including referrals to local organisations that can provide ongoing assistance based on individual needs.

Contributions

Residents are asked to contribute $246 per fortnight to help cover the ongoing costs of running The Barracks. This contribution helps with utilities, maintenance, and general upkeep of the facility, ensuring that all residents have access to a clean, safe, and comfortable living environment.

The contribution is not a rent payment, but a way to share responsibility for the smooth operation of the service. Staff can provide support and information about how these contributions are managed, and assistance is available for residents who may experience difficulty meeting this requirement.

Improvements

The Barracks is continually being improved to provide a safe, comfortable, and sustainable living environment for residents. Recent and planned upgrades include the installation of solar panels to reduce energy costs and support environmental sustainability, roof maintenance to ensure the facility remains weatherproof and secure, and the replacement of carpets and flooring to improve hygiene, comfort, and overall amenity.

Ongoing maintenance and improvements are an important part of making The Barracks a welcoming and well-maintained home for residents. Contributions from residents, along with funding and community support, help make these upgrades possible.
