Humanity Hale Hawaii

Supporting Native Hawaiian Children
Humanity Hale, founded in 2019, provides free trauma-informed support programs to foster youth in Hawai'i, with a focus on native Hawaiian children. The organization offers Hawaiian arts and culture, therapy services, art therapy, life skills training, and abuse prevention education. Their ultimate goal is to build a safe house where these young people can thrive.
The need is urgent: Hawai’i has over 1,250 children in foster care, nearly 50% Native Hawaiian (compared to 33% of the state’s overall youth population). Foster care is often called a “highway to homelessness” in the U.S., with:
- 20% experiencing homelessness within 4 years of leaving the system
- 50% of the U.S. homeless population having spent time in foster care
On Hawai’i Island, resources for foster youth and those aging out are limited. Research shows that strong cultural identity builds mental health resilience, social well-being, and better coping skills among foster youth.
Humanity Hale fills this critical gap by providing culturally-grounded support, helping foster youth develop both practical skills and cultural connections essential for their future success. The planned safe house will create a permanent sanctuary where these young people can build the foundations for independent, healthy lives rooted in their cultural heritage.
