Healing Sanctuary Masaai Women

Healing sanctuary for at-risk Maasai women
Nancy Milanoi, a Maasai leader and activist, escaped an arranged marriage as a young teenager and dedicated her life to helping others in similar situations.
She has rescued and sheltered hundreds of young women and their children in her own home, offering them education, employment opportunities, and guidance—all while respecting Maasai traditions.
Nancy plans to use the manyatta (traditional village house) in Esonorua village as a sanctuary for Maasai women at risk where they can heal from trauma and learn practical skills. The manyatta currently needs essential infrastructure including water access, internet connectivity, and repairs for all the roofs which are leaking.
Our goals for this community include:
- Supporting the restoration of the manyatta village to serve as a women’s sanctuary
- Installing water access and internet connectivity at the manyatta
- Repairing the leaking roofs to provide proper shelter
- Establishing a reusable sanitary pad production facility that provides employment for the young women—we’ve already gifted 500 reusable sanitary pads as a stopgap measure
- Building a well near the village to address the critical need for accessible drinking water—currently, women must walk miles to reach water sources.
These initiatives will provide immediate relief while creating long-term sustainable solutions for this Maasai community, combining respect for traditional values with practical support for women’s empowerment and basic needs.
